Guess who

November 4, 2010

Three guesses as to who wrote this?

The first two years of the Obama administration have dealt a major blow to the pretense of the Democratic Party as a party of the “people” or the “middle class.” It is increasingly clear that it speaks for major sections of the financial elite and the most privileged and comfortable sections of the middle class—including the trade union bureaucracy, the civil rights establishment and wealthiest layers of African-Americans and other minorities, and the petty-bourgeois left-liberal and ex-radical milieu that long ago rejected the class struggle in favor of identity politics

It was posted at the World Socialist Website….

Strangely, I found myself agreeing with it & wondering why the heck the only ones noticing this are the extreme left! In reading a book called “Limbo” the case is made repeatedly that America doesn’t like to talk about or acknowledge class disparities. I do agree that the Democrats are simply setting up a complete different caste/class system that favors a different ‘aristocracy’ as opposed to making it easier for anyone with gumption to transition between classes

modern “liberalism’s” ideas are about replacing an unimaginably large multitude of diverse and competing ideas – each one individually chosen, practiced, assessed, and modified in light of what F.A. Hayek called “the particular circumstances of time and place” – with a relatively paltry set of ‘Big Ideas’ that are politically selected, centrally imposed, and enforced not by the natural give, take, and compromise of the everyday interactions of millions of people but, rather, by guns wielded by those whose overriding ‘idea’ is among the most simple-minded and antediluvian notions in history, namely, that those with the power of the sword are anointed to lord it over the rest of us.

Having read “Last Exit to Utopia”, my primary issue with socialism as expressed particularly in communism is that before they can actually allow the people to rule themselves, they have to architect society into the right type of people to be self-ruled. It sets up a ‘wise class’ who mysteriously never seem to think it’s time to let the people take part in the give, take and compromise at the level of “millions of people.”

Tyranny is mediatized by pointing to the concept of a utopia. Unfortunately,  the people are never really ready to take part in Utopia & need to be “cleansed” to get closer to being ready. Cleansing of a society is NEVER pretty even if it’s just a messianic attempt to dicate by government fiat that people share more of their wealth…

“Imagine that you yourself are building the edifice of human destiny with the object of making people happy in the finale, of giving them peace and rest at last, but for that you must inevitably and unavoidably torture just one tiny creature….and raise your edifice on the foundation of her unrequited tears-would you agree to be the architect on such conditions.” -Dostoyevsky (The Brothers Karamazov)

Thoughtful article. Good points on the never ending quest for “Utopia”. It’s one of those journeys that has a sorry beginning, but no end.

Interesting insights. It will be interesting if and when the cleansing is acknowledged by those folks–even though it is their intention.
