Ah, those nasty laws…

December 8, 2013

Bugs Bunny used to say that the reason he didn’t fall down while standing on an unsupported ledge was that he never studied law (Law of Gravity).

I really don’t know if this article will be right or wrong – “Obamacare, where the liberal dream crashes and burns“. Didn’t they say that once the USSR collapsed the world would realize that communism doesn’t work? Plenty of evidence that isn’t the case….

Still, the article did point out that what would make the law collapse under its own weight wasn’t The Republicans. Or The Tea Party. Or Democrats Standing For Re-election in 2014.

The biggest threat is Murphy’s Law, along with its corollary, the Law of Unintended Consequences. These are the most powerful laws in the world. They are even more powerful than the Affordable Care Act, and they are the nemesis of all master plans. Evidently, the President and his merry band of wonks had never heard of them.

The more complicated the plan, the more moving pieces, the more likely it is something unexpected will go very very wrong. Rube Goldberg’s work in controlled situations, but the slightest angle off & the delicate process comes to a halt. The more confident you are, the more assured of your entitlement, skill, ability to win, the fact that you won in the past because you were “just that good”, well, at some point you come up against something or someone who doesn’t back down as a result of your swagger. It’s simply the law of humanity & the history of mankind.

It was more the reaction to Murphy than to Murphy itself. We always preach in strategy sessions that you need to game the possible consequences. The administration just seemed to assume from Pawn to King-4 that the game was checkmate without ever watching the rest of the board move.

USSR collapsed, but it still pays to be a communist in the US. It’s not like anyone lost tenure over the collapse of any regime…
