Sigh. May Day

April 30, 2012

I’m thinking this was supposed to be a NICE holiday . But if you were in Kiev in the 80’s on May Day, it’s not so great – the officials kinda sorta forgot to mention that although the weather LOOKED nice, it wasn’t so great outside

While the Chernobyl firefighters and others performed acts of heroism, the bosses of the Soviet state obfuscated. An evacuation of the nearby town of Pripyat was begun only thirty-six hours after the explosion; the second stage of the evacuation, including a wider zone that eventually displaced 116,000 people, did not begin until May 5. The Communist Party in Ukraine insisted that May Day parades should carry on as usual in Kiev even though winds were blowing in that direction.

Could that happen here? Dunno – wonder if this could EVER be true

But the reason for the lack of information was the Soviet system itself, which reflexively buried the truth. At each level of authority, lies were passed up and down the chain; the population was left in the dark; and scapegoats were found

I’m recommending you stay inside in full disclosure. A different kind of poison is being unleashed

Yeah, while OWS campers certainly DO leave toxic waste behind in their wake, it’s not exactly Chernobyl levels of radioactivity. I thought these guys were green, environmentally sensitive..and, oh never mind. It’s kind of like the “People’s Republic of ____” – those countries have to say they’re the PEOPLES republic or someone might mistake their actions were intended to starve and imprison their people, or something.

Will the media and authorities be honest about the OWS impact, more so than the USSR officials were regarding Chernobyl?

Well, if THIS poster is any indication, Gateway Pundit has the image – like the Magic-8 ball, my answer is “reply fuzzy. Ask again

I guess it’s not that much of a shocker…Twitter has an infestation of “potty mouthed censors”, so perhaps “forward” is really “FORWARD COMRADES!(after we shut up these idiots with our tolerance and first amendment rights)

I guess we know what the Occupiers will be doing during their time off – busily protesting corporate greed and conservative intolerance on their iPhones as they busily work the Twitter algorithms to shut up anyone who disagrees with them.

A very good friend of mine was at university in Kiev during Chernobyl – it is true that Belarus/Minsk suffered a great deal more since the cloud blew north, but there was still some impact felt by the community locally

It’s entirely appropriate, it seems to me, that the communist workers May Day celebration should have brought death and misery to its practitioners. It’s sort of an accelerated version of the ideology itself. But it’s not clear how much harm was actually caused; it’s a controversial topic.

Many aspects of Chernobyl are overstated now, as they were understated by the Soviets at the time — the same ideology, but aimed toward different purposes.

Meanwhile, May Day is a big day for unions in the US and elsewhere.

Typically celebrations like that involved inebriated workers marching behind banners. They (the individuals parading) didn’t necessarily have any interest in politics, or even if they did saw eye to eye with the party, but a day off is a day off.
You are right, in retrospect, the amount of radiation received by ordinary Kiev residents doesn’t seem harmful, but who wants to be a lab rat?
