When “The Movement” Becomes “The Man”

When I poked my head up to weakly defend OWS the other day, I made this comment to our Edgy friend:

Chaos sometimes generates a higher state or order, but it’s usually brief. I’ll give it a 50/50 shot that we watch these groups self-destruct on TV when they start arguing about inane rules for using the porta-potties.

I enjoy being right on occasion.

As New York Magazine reported, if the protesters acted like extras from Delta in Animal House, their attempts to organize a response and control the drumming comes straight out of Animal Farm:

And of course, the drum rules, confiscation of tips, rules for talking to media… I enjoy watching people who can’t handle rules slowly realize that a lot of the rules we have in place actually aren’t all that bad in comparison.  Next, I’ll be looking for the stories on trenchfoot, rampant STDs, and the like.  I hope it doesn’t devolve to people dying… though I worry that it’ll come to that before the cops finally shut it down.

I will note that most of the politicians who came out in support of this early have suddenly stopped yapping.  If we get much beyond the Cynthia-McKinney-left-fringe in support past this point, I’m guessing that whoever says it really isn’t paying attention.

    you called it.

rules on the drumming, huh. doubt these rules will help the nearby residents with the noise.

and why haven’t they made any rules regarding feet-sniffing?

because something oughta be done about that.

anyone who is NOT a sociopath and who says that they can’t stand hierarchy, authority or civilization is someone who benefits and profits from all of them but it too stupid to realize it….until they overthrow all the protections of what they hated & become victims to what they promoted (ask Lenin’s supportive peasants how it turned out for them….or further back – ask the Jacobins how it worked out for THEM….)

This comment is off topic but your history lesson applies to what is happening in Libya now. Gaddafi was a bad dude, but its not clear that whoever emerges as the new leader will be any better – and might not be someone whom the US will have any influence over.
