Totalitarian temptations

October 10, 2010

I once asked a friend of mine who I knew from highschool why – if atheism was such a peaceable and preferred state of mind – did every openly atheistic state start out by killing a good chunk of its own populations in the 20th century?

Answer: correlation does not equate to causation

Fast forward to the resignation of a prominent physics professor from a prominent scientific society because “Global warming is the greatest and most successful pseudoscientific fraud I have seen in my long life” (Link to “The Telegraph)

Interestingly, the comments to the article fit the normal bill – insults, trolls, those that think they have better data, etc. And an interesting point comes up – there are *correlations* made between warming events and carbon footprint, but no *causation* has been proven. Just inferred.

So – I think I have the thinking articulated (not that I “understand it”)

  • Atheistic regimes (18th century France, Cambodia, USSR, China) go on a killing spree of their own people in the 20th century: “Just correlation – you can’t PROVE the atheism was the cause”
  • Global warming data: “It’s correlated!!!! It’s the cause and IT’S VERY VERY BAD!” (assuming that the ideal state of the earth was dominated by pre-industrialized 19th century rural farms – for no apparent scientific reason).
  • Global warming ads that express disturbingly violent thoughts: “Neither correlation or causation, it’s comedy. Heh heh.”

Why do academics and “intellectuals” have such soft spots for totalitarian regimes and violent words, if not outright behaviors? It’s very disturbing

Last Exit to Utopia appears to have had it right – “Inside the heart of many uber-liberals with socialist leanings, the soul of a totalitarian tyrant is lurking” (paraphrased quote)

“The totalitarian phenomenon,” Revel observed years ago, “is not to be understood without making an allowance for the thesis that some important part of every society consists of people who actively want tyranny: either to exercise it themselves or—much more mysteriously—to submit to it.”

But THIS administration would NEVER resort to that….right? Right?

Great post. Folks on the left rarely seem to apply their own logic to themselves. What always baffles me is the question whether it’s on purpose or unthinking.

I believe it is on purpose. They know what is best for society and will go to any lengths to achieve it based on what’s been said and written by so called liberal intellectuals. After all, Obama made the statement at a commencement address that 24/7 information via the Internet was “dangerous”.
