The paranoid survive – the rest get surprised….

September 12, 2010

From the NY Times

….But voters do not feel that the administration and Congress have delivered the fundamental change they were seeking when they swept President Obama and huge Democratic majorities into office nearly two years ago….The Democrats are in deep, deep trouble because they have not effectively addressed the overwhelming concern of working men and women: an economy that is too weak to provide the jobs they need to support themselves and their families

Just now, he’s noticing that policies that pay no attention to the economic situation don’t relieve the economic situation, and is shocked SHOCKED when companies respond with layoffs.. Talk about waking up late from the 2008 hangover.

Then again, the democrats allowed themselves to believe their fantasy had come true. Unfortunately, “flyover country” hadn’t suddenly become enlightened and hadn’t acquiesced to their social betters.  “Men of reason” don’t like to admit it, but there are a lot of situations that occur because of a set of circumstances and personalities and events that come together in just the right way to tip the balance.

“Obama’s 2008 victory was a personal one,” says Bill Galston, an adviser to President Clinton. “It wasn’t a vote for a more expansive view of the role and reach of government.”…“Never allow a crisis to go to waste. There are opportunities to do big things.” But in doing big things, they failed to fully attend to (and be seen attending to) the immediate economic needs of the middle class

Fundamentally, a lot of people elected Obama because they thought that GWB’s policies were not pragmatic enough. Those same voters also probably didn’t bother to look at what part of the government actually has the checkbook, vs the part of the government who proposes the budgets. Pelosi’s been Speaker of the House and mistress of the checkbook longer than Obama’s been in office

The issue isn’t that GWB or Pelosi+GWB are or were the ideal most voters were seeking – but the trends cited in this article about the competitiveness of the USA relative to other countries were going the wrong way already. Pushing faster in that direction wasn’t what many people had in mind – the mandate for change was “reverse direction and head east” not “continue heading west but push your speed from 50MPH to 150MPH while hurtling towards a cliff”

Strategically, it was a huge miss because they didn’t realize they had been lucky, and chose to operate in an environment that didn’t exist

High tech is full of stories where a business person is in the “right time right place right personality” situation, then leverages those opportunities to establish their companies as a dominant force. If those entrepreneurs are being honest, they will say they got lucky, then stayed practical and paranoid. They continued to operate as if they could lose, even as they won.

This administration has a lot of unique characteristics – one of which is the hurt and mystification over the sudden loss of devotion and love after enacting their pet policies they thought they were being asked to put in place as a result of the supposed mandate….they acted like “we won” instead of realizing at any moment, they could lose.
