“Smart stimulus”?

September 7, 2010

Wow. I couldn’t believe the headline was true – but it was….From “Right response to rising unemployment is smart stimulus spending

Laura Tyson, the chair of the Council of Economic Advisers and the National Economic Council in the Clinton administration and a member of President Obama’s Economic Recovery Advisory Board….makes a case for for a smarter and more focused investment in America

Did they really just place that little white ball on the tee, hand me a bat and say “give it a whack?”

Seriously?!?

I just can’t resist.

So….my questions

  1. are they saying the first round of stimulus was “stupid spending” in contrast to “smart spending?”
  2. Were the members of Congress directing where the money headed the means or method by which  ‘stupid’ got injected into the first stimulus?
  3. If yes on #3, why are they wanting us to re-elect them?
  4. Weren’t we supposed to have elected ‘smarter than Bush’ by getting a Yale Law school grad in office?
  5. If yes on #4,  why wasn’t the White House’s direction on the first stimulus ‘smart?’

OH MY WORD. Ms Tyson goes on to say:

An increase in government investment in roads, airports and other kinds of public infrastructure would be cost-effective, too, as measured by the number of jobs created per dollar of spending. And it would help reduce the road congestion, airport delays and freight bottlenecks that reduce productivity and make the United States a less attractive place to do business.

So, the fact that our capital gains tax, corporate taxes and regulatory environment all happen to be less friendly than FRANCE – that has absolutely nothing to do with the productivity issue. See links at this blog post from while ago

No, the lack of productivity has nothing to do with going through a national “Chicago machine style shakedown” on the Potomac.

It’s all because of …..congestion.

I think that makes a STRONG case for following this headline – “Time to sweep economists off thrones” from the Financial Times

I can’t hit anything smaller or faster than a whiffle ball on a T unless I’m playing Wii.
which frankly, is as difficult a challenge as it was to whack at the contents of that article. So many ways to hit it, so little time….

The difference between Lynn and me…

Lynn thinks you put a ball on a tee and hit it with a bat, especially since she has young kids. I had to read that line three times before I thought of tee-ball.

I was immediately going to golf and how I’m lousy with my driver, so I just avoid the tees. That’s what I get for not having kids.
