Even Tolkien had a Wormtoungue….
Instapundit linked to a blog about “statist thugs and the rocks they crawl out from under” – talking about how there always seem to be small minded control freaks who manage to weasle themselves into positions of influence and/or authority.
The article talks about how when Germany started their WWII conquest of other nations, many people were shocked at what the German people would do to other humans. What’s interesting is that a lot of these types of commentaries focus largely on 20th century despots (Lenin, Stalin, Pol Pot, North Korea, Cuba, USSR…the normal ilk)
One of the things that progressives don’t like to discuss is the common patterns of humanity that continue to repeat. While it is ironic that “FORWARD” and utopia seem to involve a lot of “REPEAT” and “tragic human suffering”, the weak, cowardly security bully personality who abuses their power is a theme throughout history. Some of my favorite biblical stories talk about these individuals
“And when Haman saw that Mordecai did not bow down or do obeisance to him, Haman was filled with fury. But he disdained to lay hands on Mordecai alone. So, as they had made known to him the people of Mordecai, Haman sought to destroy all the Jews, the people of Mordecai, …” (Esther 3:5-6 RSV)
Don’t respect me? I’ll wipe out your entire NATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There are so many European kings to choose from, I’m hard pressed on which ones to start with.
How about these losers?
Daniel 6: 3 Now Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom. 4 At this, the administrators and the satraps tried to find grounds for charges against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so. They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent. 5 Finally these men said, “We will never find any basis for charges against this man Daniel unless it has something to do with the law of his God
It ends in a lions den, in case you’re curious – and no, Daniel isn’t the guy that becomes Meow Mix.
Fiction has a lot of these characters – remember the pivotal moment in “Back to the Future” – what changed the future as Marty McFly knew it? What about Grima Wormtoungue in LOTR or Madame Therese Defarge in “Tale of Two Cities”, Javert from Les Miserables….I could go on.
We can move “forward”, talk about “utopia”, blame what’s wrong with the world on the environment, on wealth inequality, on the intolerant, on the haters, on outdated religion and ideas…. in the end history demonstrates that secular and/or government “progress” can’t completely remove the “Human” from “humanity”.
